There is a good reason why Geographe Bay hosts Western Australia’s most popular sailing week. That is because it’s a great venue, and that is also a very good reason for the World Match Racing Tour to use the venue for the upcoming Geographe Bay Cup.
Amongst the features that make this bay so special are the 30 kilometres of beaches, the Busselton Jetty, the crystal clear azure waters, and the bayside towns of Busselton and Dunsborough. This beautiful crescent of coastline is marked at its western end by Cape Naturaliste and in the east by the town of Bunbury.
Situated so that it is protected from the huge swells that roll across the Southern Ocean, and from the prevailing south westerly breezes, this is one of the few bays on the whole Western Australian coast where the predominant breeze is offshore. The Bay is also shallow for over a mile out from the shoreline, providing flat water sailing in anything but a northerly breeze.
The course area for the Geographe Bay Cup is just to the east of Busselton’s famous jetty, which runs for nearly 2 kilometres out from the beach. Depending on the wind direction, the jetty, which happens to be the longest in the Southern Hemisphere, could be a great viewing platform for the M32 racing. Otherwise, anywhere along the foreshore will be close enough to the action to watch the match racing battles unfold. The teams will be based in the Port Geographe Marina that is about 2 kilometres east of the jetty, and where the Deck Marina Bar and Restaurant provides a great scene to mix with the teams post race. The World Match Racing Tour’s Geographe Bay Cup will coincide with the first three days of the 2017 Geographe Bay Race Week, so the Marina will be buzzing with activity.
We can expect exciting racing with a great breeze forecast and the flat water allowing some spectacular speeds. This is also a qualifying event for Match Cup Sweden in July, the most popular of the championship level events hosted on the party island of Marstrand and so the teams will be giving everything to finish in the top two and snatch one of those valuable invitations.
It is going to be a full weekend of activity in Busselton, with a number of other major events happening, the two most notable being the South West Craft Beer Festival and the Busselton Jetty swim. The Beer Festival is on Saturday 11th, with most of the south west’s famous boutique breweries offering their products. The Jetty Swim happens on Sunday morning, with hundreds of swimmers taking on the challenge of swimming out to the end of the jetty and back.
It’s definitely worth the drive to Busselton this weekend.
