The WMRT Swan River Match Cup will be sailed on a race course set up in Matilda Bay, Swan River, Perth and hosted by Royal Perth Yacht Club.
Racing days are from 23rd January – 25th January 2017 and will commence at 10:00 each day until approx. 17:00 (weather dependant).
The Swan River’s Matilda Bay has been host to many match racing events, which is hardly surprising as it is an almost perfect venue. Bounded on two sides by land suitable of spectators, and in close proximity to the world famous Royal Perth Yacht Club, renowned for its history of hosting match racing events.
Of course Royal Perth Yacht Club’s best known association with match racing was as the first challenging club ever to win the America’s Cup. After that they were hosts and organisers of what many regard as the best ever America’s Cup, in 1987, though that event was of course sailed on the Indian Ocean off Fremantle.
Probably the two best known events to have been hosted on this stretch of water were the Australia Cup and the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta, both in their time much respected events on the international circuit. The sailors that contested these events range from multiple Olympic Gold Medallists, to America’s Cup winners, and those who have achieved success at the highest level of the many different disciplines of sailing.
Running along the north side of Matlida Bay is the Mounts Bay Road, one of the main arteries taking traffic into the City of Perth, and it is no exaggeration to say that the M32 catamarans will be able to sail within a few metres of the vehicles using this road. We hope the teams don’t frighten the drivers too much.
Anywhere along this shoreline between the road and the river is great of spectators. As the bay’s shore bends around away from the road towards the yacht club, there are pleasant grassy areas that roll down to the water’s edge, where you can watch without the traffic roaring past.
Then of course there’s the balcony of the Royal Perth Yacht Club, with its world renowned friendly atmosphere, great bar staff and food available. Look across the marina to the race course, with the City of Perth’s distinctive skyline as a back drop, sounds like a good way to spend and afternoon.
It is at the yacht club that you can get up-close and person with the hi-tech 32 foot catamarans that are used for the event, when they are not racing. The boats will be moored alongside the Royal Perth’s pontoons when they’re not in action, so take the opportunity to get a close look at these spectacular machines.
