In one of the most exciting finals in Gold Cup history, Italy’s Francesco ‘Checco’ Bruni, sailing with Luna Rossa Team Pierluigi de Felice, Xabi Fernandez and Nick Hutton, clinched their first Gold Cup win in a tense 3-2 final against Great Britain’s Sir Ben Ainslie (sailing with Iain Percy, Matt Cornwell, and Christian Kamp). It was the first time an Italian had ever won the iconic King Edward VII Gold Cup and a historic victory for Bruni, who had lost only one race in reaching the finals. From Palermo Sicily, Bruni has one of the impressive sailing careers in the sport. A three-time Olympian in different classes, he finished 12th at the 1996 Olympics in a Laser, 11th at the 2000 Olympics in a 49er and 7th at the 2004 Olympics in the Star class. He has competed in no less than six America’s Cup’s with Luna Rossa Challenge in 2003, 2007, 2013, 2021 and 2024 (and with Sweden’s Artemis Racing in 2017).
