SAIL ON 'PAK LAH' We were very sorry to read the SAIL ON 'PAK LAH' We were very sorry to read the news today that former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has passed away, aged 85. As Malaysia’s fifth prime minister, “Pak Lah” as he was fondly known, was a true gentleman and statesman. He was also one of the visionaries and supporters behind the launch of the Monsoon Cup in 2005, Malaysia’s first event on the World Match Racing Tour which ran successfully for 10 years including the development of a purpose built ‘sailing stadium’ and venue in Kuala Terregganu. I THINK WE LOST JERRY AT THE AIRPORT..😬 In 200 I THINK WE LOST JERRY AT THE AIRPORT..😬 In 2003, after an early departure from the Louis Vuitton Challenger Series for the 31st America's Cup in Auckland, Stars & Stripes skipper Ken Read assembled a team of match racing pros in Long Beach to conquer the 39th edition of the Congressional Cup. After defeating Australia's James Spithill 2-0 in the semi-final, Read went on to beat New Zealand's Gavin Brady 2-1 in the final securing his first win on the [then named] Swedish Match Tour. We caught up with Ken, now President of North Sails and one of the world's most accomplished sailors, to ask him about his Con Cup win.. "The Congressional Cup in 2003 goes in my books as one of the most fun and exhilarating wins of my career. It felt like home away from home. With Stars and Stripes, we had spent a lot of time in Long Beach the prior year and coming back to a lot of friendly faces was fantastic. We hadn’t had a great America’s Cup run and frankly the team that went to the Long Beach YC Congressional Cup was looking for a bit of personal redemption. Terry Hutchinson, Morgan Trubovich, Andrew Scott, Jerry Kirby and I had spent nearly 2 years together prepping for that America’s Cup and it ended on a sour note. And our old boss let us know it. So we had something to prove. And adding old friend and long time crew member Moose McClintock to the mix was great for the team. Also, we went out to California as a group about a week early to all be in Morgan’s wedding party---and it was a party---and ironically the wedding party was a mix of our Congo Cup team and Gavin Brady’s team. So we had spent a lot of time with them leading up to the event, and then met them in an absolutely CRAZY finals…which we all still talk about today. If great regatta’s are about friends and wild experiences and sailing at a high level then that Congressional Cup was about as good as it gets. The celebration after winning will go in the record books. I think we lost Jerry at the airport late that night.
