Nicklas started as many others did sailing Optimists. He competed in the Worlds in 2003 and 2005 coming 5th and 9th. He quickly moved on to sailing the Europe Dinghy achieving top rankings in both the Worlds and European Championships. He moved on again to the International 470 Class Dinghy as well as the 49er and began match-racing with friends.
In 2014, he helped form the ESSIQ Racing Team to officially kick off his career in match-racing competing in their first WMRT Regatta in Marstrand. Over the years, Nicklas and the team have continuously improved and have led the 2018 WMRT achieving within the top five throughout the year as well as finishing fifth in the 2018 Argo Group Gold Cup.
