London (22 August, 2022) Following the postponement of the 2021 WMRT Final scheduled to take place in Shenzhen China in December 2021, and later postponed to March 2021, organisers of the World Match Racing Tour have today confirmed the 2021 WMRT Final has been officially cancelled. As a result, the 2021 Match Racing World Championship title will not be awarded.

Despite the Shenzhen event being fully prepared and ready to welcome competitors and officials to Shenzhen in March, international travel restrictions to China remain in place which has made it impossible to host the postponed WMRT 2021 Final. The World Match Racing Tour is now focusing on the 2022 championship schedule which started in April at the Congressional Cup in California, USA.

The WMRT 2022 Final is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen China in December 2022, however, due to the travel restrictions still being in place for international visitors to China, the tour has also confirmed the cancellation of Shenzhen, China as the host venue of the 2022 WMRT Final. The tour will now seek to finalise an alternative venue to host the 2022 WMRT Final, as WMRT Executive Director James Pleasance explains;

“It has obviously been disappointing we have not been able to travel to China for the WMRT Final last year, and this year as well. We are continuing to work with our partners in Shenzhen so we can be ready to visit as soon as possible. In the meantime, due to the ongoing travel and visa restrictions, we are now in the process of securing an alternative venue for the 2022 WMRT Final which we hope to announce shortly.”
